Veritable Vegetable is an organic produce distributor in San Francisco. The company invested in measures that are paying back handsomely by lowering their operating costs. With lighting and refrigeration ef ciency improvements, repowering a diesel truck with natural gas, and adopting comprehensive recycling and composting practices, Veritable Vegetable achieved 7% average annual growth and avoided 700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions while expanding into a second warehouse and adding a third shift.

The Facts

A pre-1991 refrigerator or freezer consumes about 1,500 kilowatt-hours annually, costing up to $200 a year to run.

 

A decade-old refrigerator, that uses 1,300 kwh a year, produces 2,000 pounds of CO2, roughly the same amount as burning 105 gallons of gasoline.
