Veritable Vegetable is an organic produce distributor in San Francisco. The company invested in measures that are paying back handsomely by lowering their operating costs. With lighting and refrigeration ef ciency improvements, repowering a diesel truck with natural gas, and adopting comprehensive recycling and composting practices, Veritable Vegetable achieved 7% average annual growth and avoided 700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions while expanding into a second warehouse and adding a third shift.

 

Lick-Wilmerding High School

Lick-Wilmerding High School is a private school serving more than 400 students in San Francisco. The new Technology and Design Center is equipped with solar panels, natural daylighting, on-demand hot water and other design features that minimize energy use while improving the learning environment. Changing cafeteria practices eliminated plastic water bottles and increased composting and recycling. Through increased waste diversion, building efciency and solar electricity generation, this high school saves thousands of dollars in energy and waste disposal bills annually and avoids about 500 tons of GHG emissions.

California businesses produce more than 13,000,000 tons of paper waste a day. If that paper were recycled it would save 700,000 trees, or about 4,000,000 cubic yards of landfill space daily.
