The Solution
Use CFLs or fluorescent tubes for the most frequently used fixtures, including kitchen ceiling lights, living or family rooms, floor lamps, and outdoor porches. If you're using tubes in the kitchen, garage, or other spaces, make sure you're using the most efficient ballasts. "T-8s" use less electricity than fat-tubed "T-12s".
Install light sensors in areas that are not occupied for long periods of time, such as bathrooms, closets, garages, and outdoor areas. Sensors can be purchased at any hardware or lighting supply store.
Visit Energy Star for qualified lighting fixtures and replacement bulbs.
