The Problem

California is experiencing drought conditions, and with climate change Californians can expect drier winters to become more common.

Water and energy use are related.  Water is typically used to cool power plants, and energy is needed to pump water to where it needs to go.  Even more directly, energy is used to heat water to wash dishes, clothes and for other applications.

A typical California household uses about 1000 kilowatt-hours a month a 25,000 gallons of water! Add in the 10,000 gallons a month used for every day activities (eg. showering, sinks, toilets) and that's 35,000 gallons of water used each per household!

The Facts
Clothes washing machines account for more than 20% of water used inside the home. Older washing machines use more than 50 gallons of water per cycle, whereas newer models use less than 1/2 that much water per load!
